Scientific name of  SWORD BEAN ( Canavalia gladiata L.):

Canavalia gladiata, usually called sword bean, is a domesticated plant species in the legume (Fabaceae) family. The legume is a used as a vegetable in interiors of central and south central India, though not commercially farmed.

In Telugu it is called ‘chamma kaya’ also called ‘Tammi kaya’. In Tamil it is called ‘valavaraik-kay’ or ‘valavaran-gai’ which means, the vegetable that looks like a sword. The fruits are eaten as a vegetable in Africa and Asia.

CROP IMPROVEMENT:

Sword bean SBS 1 is an introduction and is one of the vegetables with photo-insensitivity. It matures in 110 – 120 days. It can be grown throughout the year and gives good response to irrigation. Tender pods are ready for harvest from 75 days after sowing. As a pure crop it gives an average grain yield of 1356 kg/ha and green pod yield of 7500 kg/ha. This can also be grown as border crop, intercrop and a shade crop.

Its forage and seeds have many nutritional and ethnomedicinal properties. Sword bean seeds and pods are edible and nutritious they are used for culinary purpose and  can replace broadbeans in many recipes. They are used to make soups, stews in many countries of Asia.When the mature seeds are used for cooking, because of anti-nutritional substance, they must be first dehulled, then carefully soaked in salted water, sometimes fermented and finally cooked. It was recommend to make a test before eating large quantities of sword bean seeds.

DESCRIPTION OF VARIETY – SBS 1:

Year of release : 1990

Plant habit       :  Dwarf, erect, bushy

Pigmentation   :  Green

Branches (No)  :  4 – 6

Inflorescence    :  Axillary raceme

Flower                :  Bold, light purple

Pods                    :  Long, pendulous, green, flat and fleshy (for vegetable use).

100 seed weight (g) : Becomes very hard on maturity. 131.6

Seed colour        :       Milky white

Days to 50% bloom  :  45 – 50

Salient features         :  Early duration (110 – 120 days) Vegetable cum grain crop Free from beany odour Highly     nutritious and delicious (25.9% protein) No major pests and disease.

MANAGEMENT OF FIELD OPERATIONS:

Seed rate (kg/ha) : 110-120 (Pure crop)

Fertilizers (kg/ha) : 25 N 50 P2O5

Spacing : 45 x 30 cm (irrigated), 30×20 cm rainfed.

Applications:
Sword bean is used for hiccups due to cold and deficiency, vomiting, abdominal swelling, lumbago (lower back pain) due to kidney deficiency, asthma with sputum.
1. For abdominal pain, vomiting, hiccups, etc., due to deficiency of the spleen and stomach:
Boil sword beans with fresh ginger and tangerine peel in water and drink the soup.
2. For lumbago due to deficiency of the kidneys:
Boil sword beans with a couple of pork kidneys in water for one hour. Drink the soup and consume the food.
